Which Adobe Photoshop version should a graphic designer use?

I am currently doing my diploma of graphic design and was wondering if any experts could give me advice on which photoshop version would be the minimum a graphic designer would need?

The reason why I am asking is that their are some major price differences between the versions and if an older version is still widely used this may be a better option for me at present.

  • I recently upgraded from photoshop 2 to 3 and have not had any problems with clients using this version.

  • If you are planning to work with various clients, projects and together with other design firms, then from our experience the minimum Photoshop version you should have and be using is CS4. Files from older versions as well as from versions CS5 & CS6 work on CS4, this would not be the case if you had CS3 where you will experience problems in layers breaking or moving and certain formats being lost when trying to open files from the newer versions.

You might also like to think about getting Adobe Fireworks CS4, which is mainly used for the design of web graphics, of course this depends on which area of graphic design you wish to focus on.

We wish you the best of luck!
